The journey to glass skin usually starts with the realization that you’ll probably have to get a few minimally invasive treatments – especially if you’re targeting old acne scars.

While countless treatments have a multitude of benefits, there’s one treatment in particular that is ideal for those with texture concerns. That treatment? Radio frequency microneedling. RF microneedling targets acne scars, minimizes pores, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles, helping to achieve smooth, poreless, and even-toned skin.

Here’s everything you need to know about the scar-reducing treatment.

What is RF microneedling?

Radio frequency microneedling is similar to traditional microneedling, in the sense that it uses short, tiny needles to create controlled injuries to the skin, stimulating collagen. “RF microneedling can be done head-to-toe, this treatment combines radio frequency energy with traditional microneedling,” explains Josie Holmes, a six-year aesthetic trainer at Skinney MedSpa.

How is the RF microneedling process?

The first step in RF microneedling is the much-needed numbing process. This can take anywhere from 30-45 mins. Afterward, your esthetician will cleanse your face to ensure any excess product has been removed.

Once the process begins, your esthetician will use the microneedling applicator, which is about the size of a postage stamp, containing anywhere from 10 to 64 gold-plated pins. As the pins poke tiny holes into the skin, the tips of the needles also release radio frequency, heating the skin. “Once the area is treated, we provide the skin with serums and cream to help stimulate rapid healing,” details Josie.

How does it feel?

If the numbing process wasn’t a clear indication of the pain level of RF microneedling, then try to imagine a stamp-size application of tiny heated needles poking 0.5 to 3.5 mm deep into your skin.

So, to put it simply, yes, RF microneedling can be a bit uncomfortable.

What is the recovery process?

Depending on your skin complexion, you may be a bit red and inflamed, similar to a sunburn. After 24-48 hours you can return to your normal skincare routine.

Be mindful to:

  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Use a gentle cleanser after your treatment.
  • Avoid any rigorous activity that encourages sweat.
  • Avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours.
  • Wear SPF for several weeks after your treatment.

What are the expected results?

RF microneedling has many benefits, “This treatment will reduce any texture present on the skin and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also great for targeting active acne, as the RF helps to kill bacteria beneath the skin,” says Josie.

Expected results include:

  • Smoother, fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced pore size
  • Acne scars
  • Tightened skin

When it comes to acne scars and textured skin, RF microneedling is one of the best treatments to target these concerns. “This treatment is suitable for almost anyone. Clients range from teens targeting acne and scarring to mature clients targeting wrinkles and skin laxity,” adds Josie.
